Overview
Gia Lai Province is the largest province by area in the Central Highlands, a region characterized by large-scale plantations. Major corporate groups that developed from state-run farms (such as Hoang Anh Gia Lai) run large-scale cultivation of coffee, rubber, and palm oil. It is also a region rich in the ethnic-minority culture of the Bahnar and Jarai peoples (gong culture).
Features of agriculture
Rubber (about 100,000 ha) and coffee (about 95,000 ha) are the two major crops of Gia Lai Province. The rubber cultivation area is among the largest in Vietnam, making it an important supply area for natural rubber. In recent years, in response to sluggish rubber prices, the shift to profitable fruit trees (passion fruit, banana, durian) is also advancing.
Passion fruit cultivation is expanding rapidly, and Gia Lai Province is now Vietnam's largest passion fruit producing area. The promotion of organic cultivation is also advancing, and exports of organic passion fruit to the EU and Japan have begun.
Main agricultural products
Rubber (about 100,000 ha), coffee (about 95,000 ha), passion fruit, pepper, cashew nuts, banana, cassava, sugarcane
