Overview
Kien Giang Province is a vast province facing Cambodia and the Gulf of Thailand, home to the world-class resort island of Phu Quoc. Phu Quoc pepper is a representative high-quality Vietnamese pepper brand that has obtained GI registration. Phu Quoc fish sauce (Nuoc mam Phu Quoc) is also famous as the world's first Vietnamese GI-registered item.
Rice output is also among the highest in the Mekong Delta, producing about 4 million tonnes a year.
Features of agriculture
Rice cultivation is the foundation of Kien Giang Province's agriculture, with a cultivation area of about 380,000 hectares, the largest in the Mekong Delta. On Phu Quoc Island, pepper cultivation (about 500 ha) and fish-sauce production continue as traditional industries. In coastal and island areas, fisheries (fishing and aquaculture) are also very important.
