The scale and overview of Vietnam's fruit industry

Vietnam is one of Southeast Asia's leading fruit-producing countries. According to 2023 data from the Ministry of Agriculture, fruit exports reached about US$3.7 billion, up roughly 12% from the previous year.

The main destinations are China, Japan, and Korea, and in recent years effort has gone into improving quality for the Japanese market. From the northern mountains to the southern Mekong Delta, the diversity of terrain and climate supports Vietnam's fruit industry.

Especially noteworthy is the Mekong Delta region, centered on Vinh Long and Tien Giang provinces in the south. With fertile soil and abundant water, high-quality fruit is produced year-round.

Dragon fruit: a flagship item whose strength is year-round supply

Dragon fruit boasts an overwhelming share among Vietnam's export fruits. The main producing area is Binh Thuan province, accounting for about 50% of national output.

Its greatest strength is year-round supply capacity. With the spread of supplemental-lighting cultivation, farmers can artificially induce flowering. As a result, it is shipped stably beyond the bounds of a single season.

Season and quality peak

The peak under natural cultivation comes twice a year, April–June and September–November. Dragon fruit in these periods has high sugar content and vivid flesh color.

export to Japan Volume is also rising year by year, recording a 20% increase over the previous year in 2023.

Differences among varieties

Variety Flesh Color Characteristics
White (banh hoa) White Most widely distributed. A clean, light sweetness
Red (ruby red) Red Rich sweetness. Increasing for export
Yellow Yellowish white A rare variety. Strong sweetness and aroma

Mango: variety diversity is Vietnam's strength

More than 200 varieties of mango are grown in Vietnam. By production area, Dong Thap and An Giang provinces in the south are the mainstays.

The season peaks from April to July, when about 70% of the total is harvested. May in particular is the time when price and quality are best balanced.

The variety popular in the Japanese market is Cat Hoa Loc. With little fiber and a rich sweetness, it can also meet gift demand.

Characteristics of the main mango varieties

Variety name Season Appearance Use
Cat Hoa Loc April–June Yellow-green, oval Fresh eating, gifts
Xoai Xanh Year-round Green, large Processing, green-mango salad
Xoai Chu May to July Orange, round Fresh eating, juice

Rambutan, lychee, durian: high-unit-price items in season in summer

All three come into season concentrated in summer. Sourcing timing and storage management are the keys to the business.

Rambutan

The main producing areas are Ben Tre and Dong Nai provinces. The peak is July–September, when fruit with its characteristic hairy protrusions floods the market.

Because freshness drops quickly, a well-developed cold chain is essential for export. In recent years, with improvements in quick-freezing technology, imports of frozen rambutan into Japan have also increased.

Lychee

The producing area for Vietnamese lychee is famously Bac Giang province in the north. The harvest season is only about six weeks, from late May to early July. Its very short season creates a premium feel.

In 2023, Bac Giang province's lychee exports were about 80,000 tonnes, of which about 3,500 tonnes went to Japan.

Durian

Known as the "king of fruits," durian has its main producing areas in Tien Giang and Vinh Long provinces in the south. The season is May–August, and recently exports to China have surged.

Price swings are large, and the gap between peak and lean periods can be three to four times. The choice of sourcing timing directly affects profits.

Knowing the production areas and growing background improves sourcing accuracy

Vietnam's fruit-producing areas are broadly divided into three regions. Understanding the characteristics of each makes it easier to forecast quality, price, and supply volume.

Northern area (around Hanoi, Bac Giang, Lang Son)

Because temperatures drop in winter, production of tropical fruit is limited. Lychee, peach, and citrus are the mainstays. The sense of season is distinct, and the peak tends to be short.

Central area (Da Lat highlands, Ninh Thuan, Binh Thuan)

The Da Lat highlands, at 1,500 m elevation, are a producing area for temperate fruits such as strawberries and avocados. Binh Thuan province is known as the sacred ground of dragon fruit.

Southern area (Mekong Delta, Dong Nai, Vinh Long)

This is the largest fruit-producing area. Making use of a tropical climate with an annual average temperature of 27–29°C, mango, rambutan, durian, banana, and others are mass-produced.

Its export infrastructure is also the best developed, and an export route to Japan through the port of Ho Chi Minh City is established.

Points to keep in mind when importing into Japan

When importing Vietnamese fruit into Japan, you need to check the regulations of the Plant Protection Act. Treatment conditions and inspection requirements differ by item.

Currently, the main items whose import into Japan is permitted are dragon fruit, mango, banana, and papaya. Rambutan and lychee can also be imported with conditions, but vapor heat treatment is required.

The transport options are air and sea. Air keeps freshness but costs more. The route of importing as frozen or chilled processed products has also broadened as an option in recent years.

Summary

The season of Vietnamese fruit differs greatly by item. Dragon fruit is a flagship item that can be supplied year-round, mango peaks from April to July, and rambutan, lychee, and durian are concentrated in summer.

By understanding the characteristics of the production areas, you can source aiming at the periods and areas of high quality. And comprehensive judgment that includes import regulations and transport costs leads to a stable business.

Grasping the seasons also directly connects to price negotiations and lot planning. Please make use of a year-round calendar to help stabilize your supply chain.
