Overview
Lam Dong Province's capital, Da Lat, is a highland city located at an altitude of 1,500 m, one of Vietnam's leading summer resorts, called the 'town of eternal spring'. Developed during the French colonial era, thanks to its cool climate with an annual average temperature of 18°C, this city is the only region in Vietnam where temperate vegetables, flowers, and fruit can be grown in large quantities.
Da Lat is called both the 'Karuizawa of Vietnam' and the 'Netherlands of Vietnam', an indispensable presence for domestic agriculture as a major producing area for the flower industry and highland vegetables.
Features of agriculture
In the high-tech agricultural complexes around Da Lat, Israeli-style greenhouse cultivation technology has been introduced, producing high-quality vegetables such as tomatoes, strawberries, bell peppers, and lettuce year-round. Many of the 'safe vegetables' lining the supermarkets of Ho Chi Minh City are from Da Lat.
The flower industry is also very thriving, with about 3 billion stems of roses, chrysanthemums, carnations, lilies, and more produced a year. Da Lat is said to account for about 70% of Vietnam's cut-flower market.
It is also important as an Arabica coffee producing area, and Da Lat coffee grown on farms at an altitude of over 1,000 m is gaining popularity in the international market as specialty coffee.
Main agricultural products
Highland vegetables (tomato, lettuce, bell pepper, strawberry, artichoke), flowers (rose, chrysanthemum, lily, about 3 billion stems/year), Arabica coffee, tea, macadamia nuts, avocado, persimmon
