Overview
Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, is a political and cultural center with a history of more than 1,000 years. Although a large city with a population of about 8.5 million, vast farmland remains in the suburbs, where suburban agriculture is actively carried out. Located at the center of the Red River Delta, it is blessed with fertile alluvial soil.
By absorbing and merging Ha Tay Province in 2008, its area expanded greatly, coming to include broad agricultural areas in the west and south. Agriculture-related research institutions and universities (such as the Vietnam National University of Agriculture) are also concentrated within the city, making it a center for disseminating agricultural technology.
Features of agriculture
Hanoi's agriculture is characterized by a suburban type. The production of safe vegetables (rau an toan) is thriving, and farms that have obtained VietGAP certification are increasing. Flower cultivation is also an important industry, and before Tet (the Lunar New Year), kumquats and peach blossoms color the markets.
In the western Ba Vi district, dairy-cow farming is thriving, making it one of Vietnam's leading dairy areas. In addition, the processing of handicrafts and traditional foods (rice noodles for pho, banh cuon, etc.) is also an important source of income for rural areas.
In recent years, the development of high-tech agricultural complexes has advanced, and demonstration experiments of smart agriculture using IoT and AI are also being carried out.
