Dam Doi's 721 hectares of ASC black tiger shrimp: will it benefit Japanese seafood sourcing?

In Dam Doi, Ca Mau Province at Vietnam's southern tip, an ASC-certified black tiger farming zone, teamed up with shrimp major Minh Phu, has gotten underway. It covers 268 households and 721 hectares. For Japanese seafood buyers who make certified raw material a condition, it means one procurement source tying production area and certification together has taken concrete shape. Outside procurement that tends to lean toward whiteleg shrimp (vannamei), it is worth confirming black tiger as a separate option.

Teaming up with Minh Phu to turn 268 households into an ASC zone

Dam Doi (Ca Mau Province) is advancing ASC (Aquaculture Stewardship Council) certification in black tiger farming across 268 households and 721 hectares in partnership with a Minh Phu-affiliated social enterprise. ASC is an international certification that examines environmental load, labor, and traceability, and scenes where European and Japanese retail and foodservice set it as a procurement condition are increasing. A form in which a processing major is involved from organizing the production area through obtaining certification is a move to take, across an area, a certification hard for individual farmers to reach.

This structure overlaps with the ASC acquisition by a farming cooperative advancing in the same Ca Mau. A Vietnamese shrimp farming cooperative's ASC certification is one example of a move to secure, across an area, a scarce pass for Japan and the EU.

Why go for certification with black tiger?

Whiteleg shrimp (vannamei) is the volume lead in Vietnam's shrimp exports, but black tiger (local name tom su) is large with firm meat, and Japanese demand for it is tenacious in tempura, sushi toppings, and head-on whole-shrimp display. Its unit price is higher than vannamei, and if certification is attached, brand value for foodservice and retail is easier to add. From the production area's standpoint, rather than going all in on thin-margin, volume vannamei, a strategy of securing unit price and sales channels with certified black tiger stands up.

Dam Doi's farming is not uniform. Super-intensive ponds exceed 462 hectares and improved extensive ponds exceed 7,100 hectares, with methods of differing intensity coexisting. The certified zone is an effort to select, from among these, plots that can align quality and management, and standardize them across an area.

Black tiger takes a long period to grow from fry to shipping size and is vulnerable to disease if density is raised too high. That is precisely why the ASC framework, which aligns records of water management, feed, and medication across an area, takes effect. If a processing major comes in, conveys the technique, and aligns farmers' record-keeping, stable quality and volume unreachable by a one-off pond becomes feasible. Certification is both proof of a result and a process of lifting the production area's management level.

Dam Doi's farming composition and organization

Item Scale
ASC-certified black tiger farming zone 268 households, 721 hectares
Super-intensive farming Over 462 hectares
Improved extensive farming Over 7,100 hectares
Other agriculture (vegetables, fruit trees, livestock) Over 85 hectares
Water-infrastructure development 5 projects, 6 km in length
Cooperatives (HTX) 9 organizations, 139 people
Cooperative groups (THT) 9 organizations, 173 people
Technical training (January–August 2026) 9 sessions, 246 people

The certified zone's 721 hectares is a portion compared with the over 7,100 hectares of improved extensive farming. Turned around, certified, managed plots and uncertified plots coexist in the same area. The procurement side needs to confirm not just "Dam Doi product" but which plot and which certification.

The organization figures are also material for measuring the production area's underlying strength. There is a framework of 9 cooperatives with 139 people and 9 cooperative groups with 173 people, and in just January to August 2026, 246 people took part in 9 technical training sessions. A production area where training and organization continue finds it easier to keep quality reproducible even as players change. That water-infrastructure development is advancing with 5 projects over 6 km in length also shows that investment is being directed at water management, the lifeline of farming. The certified zone stands on this kind of foundation.

What lands with Japanese seafood buyers

For Japanese buyers seeking certified raw material, the figure of 268 households and 721 hectares becomes an entry point for negotiation. If certification is taken across an area, supply stability and volume outlook are easier to project than one-off buying from farmers. If a processing major is involved, an integrated regime through primary processing, freezing, and export paperwork can also be expected. If you are aiming for head-on whole-shrimp display of black tiger or specification goods for foodservice, you will want to confirm the production area's management regime at an early stage.

The main markets for Vietnamese shrimp are swayed by US tariffs and the exchange rate, so the production-area side also has motivation to diversify channels. The gap US tariffs open for Japanese procurement becomes material for reading the negotiating room for certified black tiger. In a phase where the US-bound market swings, the production area seeks a market that evaluates quality stably. Japanese foodservice and retail that buy on quality and certification are in a position to easily serve as that receptacle.

Material for reviewing vannamei-biased procurement

Japan's imported shrimp is centered on vannamei and native black tiger, but supply sources tend to lean toward specific countries. Looking at the expansion and contraction by market, Vietnamese shrimp is in the middle of reshuffling its destinations. The reshuffling of the top 5 markets As it shows, when the demand side moves, the production area's negotiating stance also changes. There is great significance in locking up, as a candidate for the supply network now, the narrow but high-unit-price flow of certified black tiger.

What to confirm before procurement

What the Dam Doi case raises is how to size up a production area that holds certification across an area. The moves the Japanese side can take become concrete. First, confirm in writing the ASC-certified plots, certification numbers, and validity periods. Second, ask the production area how quality and size specifications change between super-intensive and improved extensive farming. Third, nail down early the integrated regime through processing, freezing, and export, and whether head-on whole-shrimp display and specification goods can be handled. In a market where certification becomes a pass, the side that confirms the terms first finds it easier to structure stable procurement.
