Overview
Lang Son Province is a northeastern Vietnamese province bordering China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, a world-class producing area for star anise (bat giac, dai hoi). The star anise that grows wild and is cultivated in the province's mountain forests accounts for a considerable portion of the world's output, and is important not only as a spice but also as a raw material (shikimic acid) for the influenza drug Tamiflu.
The two border gates of Hung Vien and Huu Lung are major hubs for agricultural trade with China, through which exports of Vietnamese fruit and agricultural products to China are carried out.
Features of agriculture
The star anise cultivation area is about 35,000 hectares, with annual output of about 15,000 to 20,000 tonnes. Much is also dried and distilled into essential oil, generating high added value. It has also obtained GI (geographical indication) registration and is distributed in the international market under the brand 'Lang Son star anise'.
The collection of rosin (pine resin), citrus fruits (mandarins), vegetable cultivation such as eggplant, and pig farming are also carried out.
Main agricultural products
Star anise (bat giac, about 35,000 ha), star anise oil, rosin (pine resin), citrus fruits, rice, vegetables, livestock (pig, water buffalo)
