Overview
Thai Nguyen is known as the premier tea-producing region of Vietnam. "Tan Cuong tea" (Trà Tân Cương) in particular is famous nationwide as the top brand of Vietnamese tea, and day-trip tea-garden tours from Hanoi are popular. The province's tea-garden area reaches about 22,000 hectares, making it one of Vietnam's leading tea-producing provinces.
About 80 km north of Hanoi, roughly 1.5 hours by car, it is a scenic region where hillside tea gardens spread out even as industrialization advances.
Features of agriculture
Thai Nguyen tea is known for the distinctive flavor produced by the moderate elevation of the hills (100-400 m) and the frequently foggy climate. Green tea is central, and traditional hand-picking and hand-rolling methods are still practiced. In recent years, production of organic and specialty teas has also grown, and exports to international markets are expanding.
Besides tea, rice farming, fruit trees (pomelo, lychee), and fish farming (tilapia, carp) are also carried out.
Main agricultural products
Tea (Tan Cuong tea, about 22,000 ha), rice, pomelo, lychee, farmed fish, timber and bamboo
