Overview

Bac Giang Province is famous as Vietnam's largest lychee producing area. The 'Luc Ngan lychee' (vai thieu Luc Ngan) grown in the province's Luc Ngan district is highly popular at home and abroad as a representative premium fruit of Vietnam. Every year during the lychee season in June and July, the whole province turns the color of lychees.

At about 50 km from Hanoi, it is close and industrialization is advancing rapidly, but agriculture is still an important industry. In recent years, exports of lychee to Japan have been realized, and Bac Giang lychee has come to line Japanese supermarket shelves as well.

Features of agriculture

Bac Giang Province's lychee cultivation area is about 28,000 hectares, with annual output reaching about 150,000 to 200,000 tonnes. The Luc Ngan district alone accounts for about 15,000 hectares, and about 160,000 households are engaged in lychee cultivation.

Entering the 2020s, exports to Japan began in earnest. To clear Japan's strict quarantine standards (vapor heat treatment), dedicated treatment facilities were set up, and the acquisition of VietGAP and GlobalGAP certification is also advancing rapidly. In 2023, more than about 1,000 tonnes were exported to Japan.

Besides lychee, citrus fruits such as mandarins and oranges, vegetables, and poultry farming (Bac Giang chicken) are also important agricultural products.

Main agricultural products

Lychee (Luc Ngan variety, about 28,000 ha), citrus fruits (mandarin, orange), vegetables, chicken (Bac Giang chicken), tea

Exports and logistics

The largest export destination for lychee is China (over 90% of the total), but in recent years export diversification to Japan, the EU, and Australia is advancing. For Japan, high-quality products that have passed through vapor heat treatment facilities are exported by air. Because the harvest period is short (about one month), the development of frozen lychee is also a challenge for export expansion.

While running a food brand in Kyoto, I have worked on products that bring out the appeal of ingredients, such as dried vegetables and vegetable powders. I am now in my second year living in Vietnam, where I am also involved in coffee production on the ground, learning the whole process from cultivation to processing and flavor development. Out of a wish to deliver foods people can enjoy with peace of mind in everyday life, I value products whose production background and the faces of their makers are visible. Drawing on the appeal of both Japanese and Vietnamese food cultures, I aim to bring a little richness to daily life.
