Overview
Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon) is Vietnam's largest economic city, and in the field of agriculture plays an extremely important role as a collection point, processing hub, and export hub for agricultural products. The city's own farmland area is limited, but the majority of Vietnam's international trade in agricultural products passes through this city.
The Binh Dien wholesale market is Vietnam's largest agricultural-products wholesale market, a hub through which agricultural products gathered from the Mekong Delta and the Central Highlands are distributed nationwide. The headquarters of many agricultural-export companies and food-tech companies are also concentrated here.
Features of agriculture
Agriculture is still carried out in the city's Cu Chi and Hoc Mon districts, centered on suburban-type vegetable cultivation, flower cultivation, and aquaculture. In the Cu Chi district, the production of VietGAP-certified safe vegetables is thriving, supplied directly to supermarkets and high-end restaurants within the city.
What makes Ho Chi Minh City most important in the field of agriculture is its function as a cluster of the agricultural-products processing industry. Many major companies in coffee processing (roasting, instant coffee), seafood processing (frozen shrimp, fish), and fruit processing (juice, dried fruit) are located here.
Main agricultural products
Safe vegetables (Cu Chi district), flowers, dairy products (urban dairy farming), farmed fish, processed agricultural products (coffee, shrimp, fruit processing)
Exports and logistics
Cat Lai Port boasts Vietnam's largest container throughput and is the center of agricultural exports such as coffee, pepper, cashew nuts, shrimp, and rice. From Tan Son Nhat Airport, freshness-focused fruit and seafood are exported by air. The Binh Dien wholesale market is one of Southeast Asia's leading wholesale markets, where more than 2,000 tonnes of agricultural products are traded every night.
