Overview
Quang Nam is a culturally rich province with two World Heritage Sites: Hoi An (its old townscape) and the My Son Sanctuary (of the Champa Kingdom). In the western mountains of the Truong Son Range live ethnic minorities such as the Co Tu and Gie Trieng peoples, where traditional cinnamon cultivation takes place.
"Quang Nam cinnamon" (Quế Trà My) is a specialty of the Tra My district; as a high-quality cinnamon, it has obtained organic certification and is exported to Japan and the EU.
Features of agriculture
On the coastal plains, rice farming and aquaculture are central. In the Tra My district in the mountains, cinnamon is grown, while in the Nam Giang district, highland vegetables and medicinal plants (a type of ginseng called "Sâm Ngọc Linh") are cultivated.
Sâm Ngọc Linh (Ngoc Linh ginseng) is a medicinal plant endemic to Vietnam, said to rival Korean ginseng in its properties, and is a super-premium product traded at hundreds of thousands of yen per kilogram.
Main agricultural products
Cinnamon (from Tra My, organic-certified), Sâm Ngọc Linh (premium medicinal ginseng), rice, aquatic products, timber, corn
