In northern Vietnam's Yen Chau, Son La Province, at a mango festival held May 29–31, 2026, 30 tonnes for South Korea, a send-off ceremony was held. Yen Chau's cultivation area is over 740 hectares, and 2026 output is expected at about 5,000 tonnes. Inside the send-off ceremony — starting from 30 tonnes for South Korea

Yen Chau's mangoes are led by the Taiwanese variety (about 500 hectares) and the round variety (about 190 hectares). VietGAP-certified orchards exceed 120 hectares, and three dedicated zones totaling 50 hectares have been set up for export. At the festival, a send-off ceremony for South Korea was held alongside a harvest competition and a product fair, and Nguyen Thanh Cong, vice chairman of the Son La Province People's Committee, backed it as 'an effort connecting production and market.'

97,000 tonnes across the province — exports to over 20 markets

Son La Province's mango cultivation is over 16,000 hectares, with output reaching about 97,000 tonnes. For export, over 10,000 tonnes comes into view for 2026, and it has so far been shipped to South Korea, China, Australia, and the U.S. Across the province's farm products as a whole, it spreads to over 20 markets, including the U.S., the EU, the UK, Japan, South Korea, Australia, and the UAE — a structure in which selected producing areas go after high-unit-price markets. Local companies have put together contracts for about 1,500 tonnes of fresh mango for the 2026 season.

Points Japanese buyers should look at

Northern mangoes have a harvest season of May–September, differing from Mekong production, and could be a supply source filling the gap in the sourcing calendar. South Korea opening a steady 30-tonne route is also evidence that the quarantine and sorting systems have reached a certain level. The Japanese market is at the stage of having its name on the province's export-destination list; full-scale fresh distribution is still ahead, but building early producing-area contact, including processing and freezing, is worth considering.

While running a food brand in Kyoto, I have worked on products that bring out the appeal of ingredients, such as dried vegetables and vegetable powders. I am now in my second year living in Vietnam, where I am also involved in coffee production on the ground, learning the whole process from cultivation to processing and flavor development. Out of a wish to deliver foods people can enjoy with peace of mind in everyday life, I value products whose production background and the faces of their makers are visible. Drawing on the appeal of both Japanese and Vietnamese food cultures, I aim to bring a little richness to daily life.
