Saigon Co.op holds "Dong Thap Fruit Week"—directly sourcing Mekong mango and durian across some 800 stores nationwide

Vietnam's largest retailer Saigon Co.op and Dong Thap Province's Department of Industry and Trade June 5–8 held "Dong Thap Fruit Week." Mekong Delta mango, durian, longan, and the like were a distribution network of about 800 stores centered on Co.opmart through which they are bought up directly, aiming to absorb into domestic demand the region's surplus that concentrates in the harvest season. The venue is the Co.opmart My Tho store in the Dao Thanh area of Dong Thap Province.

Inside Fruit Week—June 5–8, seven Mekong items

The items covered are mango, durian, longan, mandarin, rambutan, star apple, pineapple, and others. It foregrounds region brands with consumer recognition, such as Cao Lanh mango, Lai Vung pink mandarin, and Chau Thanh longan. Nguyen Tuan Linh, Deputy Director of Dong Thap Province's Department of Industry and Trade, and others took the stage, positioning it as a venue that directly connects producers and cooperatives with the modern distribution network.

A design to absorb regional surplus into domestic demand

Dong Thap Province is a major region holding over 135,000 hectares of fruit-tree cultivation and annual output of about 1.3 million tonnes. When the harvest concentrates in one period, prices tend to collapse, and when tighter inspections at export destinations coincide, inventory stagnates domestically. Saigon Co.op, using a distribution network of about 800 locations across 43 provinces and cities including Co.opmart, is seeking to become a buffer against sharp price drops by buying up directly from cooperatives and securing sales channels immediately.

Implications for Japanese buyers

The normalization of direct regional sourcing by major retailers means that collection, sorting, and logistics within Vietnam are being developed under retailer leadership. The trend of cooperatives linking directly with the modern distribution network also connects to securing export lots and developing traceability. For the Japanese side targeting processing raw material of Mekong mango and durian, a phase of regional surplus is also a timing in which room to negotiate sourcing prices arises.

I am now in my second year living in Vietnam, where I am also involved in coffee production on the ground, learning the whole process from cultivation to processing and flavor development. Out of a wish to deliver foods people can enjoy with peace of mind in everyday life, I value products whose production background and the faces of their makers are visible. Drawing on the appeal of both Japanese and Vietnamese food cultures, I aim to bring a little richness to daily life.
