Spreading rapidly amid this is aquaponics. This system, which carries out hydroponic cultivation and fish farming at the same time, is drawing attention for achieving high productivity in a limited space.

This article explains in detail, from the basic mechanics of aquaponics to practical examples near Ho Chi Minh City and revenue models.

What is aquaponics? Let's get the basics down

Aquaponics is an agricultural system that combines fish farming (aquaculture) and with hydroponics.

The mechanism is simple. Bacteria convert the ammonia-containing water that fish excrete into nitrates. These nitrates become nutrients for the plants, and as the plants filter the water, clean water returns to the fish—this cycle holds naturally.

Element

Role

Fish (such as tilapia)

Excrete organic waste (ammonia)

Bacteria

Convert ammonia into nitrates

Plants (vegetables and herbs)

Absorb nitrates as nutrients and filter the water

Compared with conventional soil cultivation, the big benefit is that water use can be cut by up to 90%. Because chemical fertilizer is also unnecessary, another strength is that it is easy to obtain organic certification.

Why aquaponics is spreading in Vietnam now

Behind the attention this system is getting in Vietnam are several social factors.

A surging urban population and a shortage of farmland

Ho Chi Minh City's population topped about 10 million as of 2025, and urbanization is advancing rapidly. Farmland area is decreasing year by year, and food production on the urban fringe is a challenge. Because aquaponics can be run even on rooftops and inside factories, it is drawing attention as a form of urban agriculture.

Rising awareness of food safety

Along with the growth of the middle class, consumers' awareness of food safety is rising. Demand for pesticide-free and organic vegetables is growing at a pace of 15-20% a year. Vegetables produced with aquaponics make traceability easy to secure and can be sold at premium prices.

Government support policy

Vietnam's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) has set the promotion of sustainable agriculture as a national goal. Subsidies and technical support are provided for smart agriculture and water-saving farming methods, and aquaponics is among the targets.

Practical examples near Ho Chi Minh City

A commercial-scale farm in Binh Duong province

In Binh Duong province, about 30 km north of Ho Chi Minh City, a roughly 500-square-meter facility-type aquaponics farm is in operation. It produces mainly tilapia, lettuce, and basil, selling them directly to upscale supermarkets and restaurants in the city.

Monthly vegetable shipments are about 800 kg. Tilapia are harvested on a three-to-four-month cycle, and a dual-revenue model earning from both fish and vegetables is working well.

Rooftop units within Ho Chi Minh City

Within the city, cases of individuals and small operators running small rooftop aquaponics are also increasing. The initial investment depends on scale, but for a small unit of 20-50 square meters you can start from about ¥500,000-1,500,000.

The local Nong Lam University is also advancing research and outreach on aquaponics, running technical training programs for farmers.

A thorough explanation of the revenue model

Aquaponics revenue is made up mainly of three pillars.

Revenue source

Approximate unit price

Characteristics

Sales of vegetables and herbs

1.5-2x that of ordinary vegetables

Premium price for being pesticide-free

Sales of fish (tilapia, etc.)

Market price

Stable as a secondary revenue stream

Experience and education programs

Equivalent to a few thousand yen per session

For urban schools and tourists

For a mid-sized farm (500-1,000 sq m), monthly sales of 2 million-5 million VND (roughly US$10,000-25,000 equivalent) have been reported. The payback period for the initial cost is generally said to be two to four years.

Points on the cost side

The largest operating cost is electricity. Because power is used for water-circulation pumps, lighting, and temperature control, a growing number of farms are combining solar panels to cut costs.

Fish feed is also an important cost element. Some farms use cheap locally produced feed or find ways to turn surplus vegetables into feed.

Potential for partnership with Japan

For Japanese agricultural stakeholders and food importers, too, Vietnam's aquaponics is worth watching.

Potential as an export item

At present, directly exporting fresh vegetables to Japan is a high hurdle, but frozen processed products and dried herbs leave room for consideration. They can be expected, in particular, as a stable supply source of basil, coriander, and perilla, which Japanese restaurants use heavily.

Exporting technology and materials

For Japanese farm-materials makers, Vietnam is also promising as a market for exporting technology and equipment. Demand for materials such as water-quality sensors and growing beds is expected to increase going forward.

Training and talent exchange

Hosting agricultural technicians for training and joint research projects are also increasing. Cases of collaboration through international cooperation agencies such as JICA are emerging, and this is becoming one pillar of Japan-Vietnam cooperation in the agricultural field.

Summary

Vietnam's aquaponics is expanding rapidly, carried by three tailwinds: urbanization, rising food-safety awareness, and government backing.

A sustainable agricultural system that can cut water use by up to 90%

Commercial-scale practical examples are increasing near Ho Chi Minh City

Revenue can be diversified across the three pillars of vegetables, fish, and experiential education

There is also potential in technical partnership and export business with Japan

If you are considering entry, the shortest path is first to understand the system with a small trial unit. Make active use of collaboration with local universities and agricultural support agencies as well.

At VN AGRI, we share the latest information on Vietnamese agriculture.

You May Also Like

The Latest Smart-Farming Adoption Cases in Vietnam

How Vietnamese Farm Produce Is Tracked with Blockchain

The front line of Vietnamese agricultural-robot development 2026

We explain how aquaponics (hydroponics combined with fish farming), which is spreading in Vietnam, works.
