Drones spray pesticides, AI diagnoses crop diseases, and farms with not a single person on them are up and running. Such scenes are already a reality.

This article explains the front-line technologies of China's smart agriculture from four angles. Touching also on the relationship with Vietnamese agriculture and with Japan, we carefully convey where Asian agriculture stands today.

The Current State and Scale of China's Smart Agriculture

China is the world's largest agricultural nation. Its cultivated area reaches about 135 million hectares, supporting the food supply for more than 1.4 billion people.

However, the aging of the rural population and labor shortages are serious challenges. To address them, government-led investment in smart agriculture has accelerated.

As of 2025, the number of agricultural drones in operation in China exceeds about one million units. AI farming The related market is expanding at an annual growth rate of over 20%. As a national-level technology investment, the scale is overwhelming even compared with other countries.

Indicator

Figure

Agricultural drones in operation

About 1 million units or more (2025)

Annual growth rate of the AI farming market

About 20% or more

Government investment related to smart agriculture

Over 1 trillion yen scale over five years

Number of provinces that have introduced unmanned farms

More than 20 provinces

Just looking at these figures conveys how serious China is.

Drone Spraying Transforms Pesticide Management

The most widely adopted smart-agriculture technology in China is the spraying of pesticides and fertilizers by agricultural drones.

The agri-drones of major maker DJI can spray about 40 hectares per hour with a single unit. Compared with conventional manual spraying, work efficiency is some 40–60 times higher. Pesticide use is also said to be reduced by about 30%.

Specific Benefits of Drone Spraying

Can handle hard-to-reach places such as slopes and paddy fields

GPS-controlled uniform spraying eliminates uneven pesticide application

Brings workers' pesticide exposure risk close to zero

Flight data can be recorded and managed in real time

In Guangdong and Hunan provinces in southern China, a majority of rice farmers have already adopted drone spraying. The cost of adoption per farm household has fallen to around 500,000 yen, including subsidies.

Similar movements are starting to appear in Vietnam, but the adoption rate is still less than one-tenth of China's. How to close this gap is one of the challenges for Vietnamese agriculture.

AI Image Diagnosis Detects Pests and Diseases Early

Farming's greatest enemies are pests, diseases, and climate change. Traditionally, there was no choice but to rely on the eyes of experienced farmers. Now, however, AI is beginning to take on that role.

Apps that automatically diagnose pests and diseases simply by photographing a leaf with a smartphone camera are spreading. A diagnostic system developed by the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences can identify more than 1,000 kinds of pests and diseases with over 90% accuracy.

Practical Examples of AI Diagnosis

Detecting rice blast
AI detects changes in leaf color 3–5 days before onset. In some cases, early response has reduced yield loss by up to 60%.

Identifying vegetable pests
Cameras installed in the field monitor around the clock, automatically counting the type and density of pests. This optimizes the timing of pesticide spraying.

Linking with soil sensors
Systems have also emerged that combine AI image diagnosis with soil sensors to detect even nutrient deficiencies and water stress.

Many of these technologies can be used with just a single smartphone, lowering the hurdle for adoption by farmers.

The Reality and Spread of Unmanned Farms

The term "unmanned farm" may sound like science fiction. Yet in China, it has already been put into practical use in several provinces.

An unmanned farm of about 700 hectares in Shandong Province is a leading example. Sowing, fertilizing, and harvesting are all handled by automated farm machinery, and the farm manager monitors everything remotely from a single tablet. There are zero resident staff.

Process

Technology used

Sowing

GPS self-driving tractors

Fertilizing

Drones linked with sensors

Weeding

Autonomous weeding robots

Harvesting

Automatic harvesting combines

Management

Cloud dashboard

Realizing unmanned farms required building out 5G communications infrastructure. Behind China's rush to roll out 5G in rural areas was a clear policy intent: the digitalization of agriculture.

On cost, the first year of adoption is expensive, but in many cases the labor-cost savings exceed the investment after three or more years of operation.

The Full Picture of Alibaba's Digital Agriculture Platform

IT giant Alibaba entered agriculture in earnest around 2019. Today, as "Alibaba Digital Agriculture," it runs an end-to-end platform spanning agriculture from upstream to downstream.

The Structure of Its Main Services

Agricultural cloud (the "agricultural brain")
A cloud platform that integrates weather data, satellite imagery, market prices, and crop growth information. Farmers can check the state of their fields in real time from a single smartphone.

Farm-direct e-commerce service
A system that connects farmers directly with e-commerce consumers. On "Taobao Agriculture," there is even a system to pre-sell crops before harvest. It achieves both stable income for producers and freshness for consumers at the same time.

Logistics and cold-chain integration
Cainiao Logistics, under the Alibaba group, handles low-temperature transport of farm produce. Cases of delivery within 48 hours from growing region to consumer are increasing.

As of 2025, more than one million farm households participate in this platform. Vietnamese mangoes and tropical fruits are also starting to flow into the Chinese market via this platform. For Vietnam's agricultural players and exporters, it is a sales channel that cannot be ignored.

Comparison with Vietnamese Agriculture and Implications for Japan

What impact might the evolution of China's smart agriculture have on Vietnamese and Japanese farming?

Comparison item

China

Vietnam

Japan

Drone adoption rate

High (over 40% of farmers)

Low (under 5%)

Moderate (10–20%)

Use of AI diagnosis

Widespread nationwide

Trial adoption in some areas

Varies by growing region

Unmanned farms

In practical use at commercial scale

Research stage

Demonstration-trial stage

E-commerce platform

A unique, massive market

Growing dependence on Chinese e-commerce

Mainly domestic

What matters for Vietnam is balancing the risks and opportunities of dependence on the Chinese market. Joining the Alibaba platform widens revenue opportunities, but it also brings reduced bargaining power and the cost of meeting quality standards.

On the other hand, adopting Chinese technology quickly to raise agricultural productivity and maintain competitiveness is also a realistic strategy. The prices of drones and AI diagnosis keep falling, reaching a level within reach even for Vietnam's small and mid-sized farmers.

Summary

China's smart agriculture has moved beyond the stage of mere technology experiments. Four pillars—drone spraying, AI image diagnosis, unmanned farms, and digital platforms—have begun to function in actual farming fields.

Let's organize the key points.

Drone spraying has spread to over 40% of Chinese farmers, cutting pesticide use by about 30%

AI image diagnosis can identify over 1,000 pests and diseases with more than 90% accuracy

Unmanned farms have begun commercial-scale operation in Shandong Province and elsewhere

The Alibaba platform has grown into a distribution base with over one million participating farm households

How Vietnamese agriculture responds to these changes will shape its competitiveness over the next five to ten years. Its closeness to China is also an opportunity to absorb technology.

At VN AGRI, we share the latest information on Vietnamese agriculture.

You May Also Like

The Latest Smart-Farming Adoption Cases in Vietnam

How Vietnamese Farm Produce Is Tracked with Blockchain

An Introduction to Aquaponics in Vietnam: How Urban Farming Works and Its Returns

China's smart agriculture is advancing rapidly through drone spraying, AI diagnosis, unmanned farms, and the Alibaba platform.
