It brings together information useful for business decisions, from a comparison with the Mekong Delta to the main crops, the double-cropping system, and the features of peri-urban agriculture.

What kind of farming region is the Red River Delta?

The Red River Delta is an alluvial plain spreading across northern Vietnam. Centered on the capital Hanoi, it spans 11 provinces and cities. Its area is about 15,000 square kilometers, and its population density is among the highest in Vietnam.

The fertile soil the Red River (Hong River) has carried down over many years supports this region's agriculture. Its history of rice farming spans thousands of years, and it is the granary that has supplied food to northern Vietnam.

The climate is subtropical monsoon, with a clear division between rainy and dry seasons. Annual rainfall is around 1,500 to 1,700 mm. In winter, temperatures can fall below 15 degrees, giving the region a farming environment different from that of the south.

Comparing the differences with the Mekong Delta

Compared with the Mekong Delta in southern Vietnam, the character of farming is quite different. Even though both are "delta farming," the climate, scale, and market orientation all differ.

Comparison item

the Red River Delta

Mekong Delta

Area

About 15,000 km2

About 40,000 km2

Number of rice crops

Two crops a year (three in some areas)

Two to three crops a year

Main crops

Rice, vegetables, fruit trees

Rice, fruit, shrimp, fish

Water conditions

Developed embankments and irrigation networks

Makes use of natural floodplains

Market orientation

Northern urban areas and the domestic market

Strongly export-oriented

Land scale

Mainly smallholders

Some relatively large-scale farming too

The Mekong Delta is strongly tied to export industries and is highly competitive internationally in rice and seafood. The Red River Delta, by contrast, is driven mainly by domestic consumption and supply to cities. For food importers too, this difference is a point that directly affects sourcing strategy.

The main crops of the Red River Delta

Rice farming is the center of agriculture

Rice is the pillar of Red River Delta agriculture, accounting for more than 60% of planted area. Many of the varieties are short-grain types close to japonica, and most have a texture familiar to Japanese palates.

The north's distinctive climate produces quality traits different from the south. Spring-crop rice grown through the cool winter tends to earn especially high marks for taste.

The expansion of vegetable production

In recent years, vegetable production has surged. In response to rising demand from large cities such as Hanoi, the growing area for cabbage, tomatoes, carrots, leafy vegetables, and the like is expanding.

Protected cultivation is also gradually spreading, and stable year-round supply is becoming possible. With rising awareness of food safety, more producers are obtaining VietGAP certification.

Fruit trees and specialty products

In provinces such as Hai Duong and Bac Giang, the cultivation of lychee and longan is thriving. Hai Duong lychee is known for its high quality, and the acquisition of certifications for export is advancing. The area also draws attention as a producer of fruits familiar in Japan, such as persimmon and loquat.

How the double-cropping system works

In the Red River Delta, two rice crops a year is the norm. This system supports the income base of farmers.

The spring crop (Vu Xuan) is transplanted in January to February and harvested in May to June. Because it starts in a cold period, seedling management is important. It is a cropping season in which diseases are less likely and quality tends to be stable.

The autumn crop (Vu Mua) is transplanted in June to July and harvested in September to October. Because it overlaps with the rainy season, measures against moisture damage and disease become a challenge.

Cropping season

Transplanting time

Harvest time

Characteristics

The spring crop (Vu Xuan)

January to February

May to June

Stable quality; high yield

The autumn crop (Vu Mua)

June to July

September to October

Disease management in the rainy season is a challenge

Through this two-crop system, farmers secure two income opportunities a year. In some areas, farmers introduce vegetables as a second crop, using their land in a way close to triple-cropping.

The current state and challenges of peri-urban agriculture

Around Hanoi, peri-urban agriculture is developing rapidly. With a population of more than 10 million, Hanoi's food demand is large, and the call for fresh produce is also rising.

Because suburban farms have good access to the market, a move toward higher-value crops is advancing.

The shift to higher-value crops

Near Hanoi, the cultivation of high-unit-price crops such as organic vegetables, herbs, and flowers is increasing. Against a backdrop of rising consumer awareness of food safety, farms obtaining organic certification have begun to appear.

The shift in farmers' mindset toward "quality over quantity" is a trend worth watching for businesses in Japan that are considering food imports.

The spread of direct farm sales

Beyond direct delivery to supermarkets and markets, direct farm sales using social media are also increasing. Delivery infrastructure into Hanoi is being developed, and the distance between consumers and producers is narrowing.

The structural problem of farmland conversion

At the same time, the conversion of farmland to residential land through urban expansion has become a serious problem. It is said that farmland area near Hanoi has shrunk by about 15% over the past decade. From the standpoint of food security, stronger farmland-conservation policies are needed.

Summary

The Red River Delta is an important region that carries agriculture in northern Vietnam.

Although its area is about one-third that of the Mekong Delta, a double-cropping system that combines rice and vegetable production is well established, supporting the food supply of the north. Making use of its geographical advantage of being close to Hanoi, a shift toward high-value, city-oriented agriculture is also advancing.

From a business standpoint, unlike the export-centered Mekong Delta, it is important that it functions as a supply base for the domestic market and the northern urban area. When considering sourcing farm products or doing business on the ground, a strategy that takes this regional character into account is needed.

At VN AGRI, we share the latest information on Vietnamese agriculture.

You May Also Like

Vietnamese Fermented Foods and Agriculture: The Full Process of Nuoc Mam, Pickles, and Fermented Tea

A Guide to the Crops Behind Vietnamese Cuisine: The Growing Regions and Agricultural Background of Herbs and Seasonings

[1,3
6,8
["post-576","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-vietnam-agri","category-agriculture","tag-vietnam","tag-agriculture
["GET
