But the branding of the producing area behind this, and the innovations in export technology, are not well known.

This article explains in detail the realities of Bac Giang Province, the center of Vietnam's lychee production, the features of the harvest season, how export to Japan succeeded, and the latest technology for keeping freshness.

Why is Bac Giang Province the "holy land of lychee"?

Located in northern Vietnam, Bac Giang Province is the country's largest lychee producing area. The province's total lychee cultivation area reaches about 28,000 hectares, with annual output of up to about 180,000 tonnes.

The province's climate has ideal conditions for lychee cultivation. The cold, dry winter promotes flower-bud differentiation, and the cycle in which the fruit swells during the rainy season from spring to early summer produces fruit with high sugar content.

The Luc Ngan variety and the establishment of the Bac Giang brand

Bac Giang Province's signature variety is "Luc Ngan." In 2015 it received geographical indication (GI) designation and was formally protected as a regional brand.

A geographical indication is a type of intellectual property right that allows the name of a specific region to be used on a product. It is the same mechanism as France's Champagne and Italy's Parma ham.

The features of Luc Ngan lychee are as follows.

Characteristics

Details

Fruit size

Large (25 to 35 g per fruit)

Sugar content

18 to 22 degrees Brix (high sugar content)

Flesh

Thick and juicy, with a small seed

Outer skin

Vivid red to pink

Aroma

Floral and mellow

This high quality translates into competitiveness in international markets.

Harvest season and shipping calendar

The harvest of Vietnamese lychee varies in timing by variety and region. This is a major key to export strategy.

Harvest schedule by variety

Bac Giang Province grows multiple varieties from early to late season, with shipments continuing in sequence from late May to early July.

Variety

Harvest time

Characteristics

Thieu early variety

Late May to early June

Small, with stronger sweetness

Luc Ngan mainstay

Mid-June to early July

Large; the mainstay for export

Late variety

Early to mid-July

Somewhat higher shelf stability

At the June harvest peak, several hundred tonnes a day circulate to market across Bac Giang Province. In this period, roads within the province get congested with trucks carrying the harvest.

Year-to-year variation in harvest volume

Lychee is a fruit with strong alternate bearing (a tendency for good and poor harvests to alternate). Output varied at about 180,000 tonnes in 2022 and about 150,000 tonnes in 2023. For this reason, flexible quantity adjustment is needed in export contracts.

The background to the successful first export to Japan

Entering the 2020s, Vietnamese lychee came to be stocked in Japanese mass retailers and department stores. Several factors intertwine in this success.

Clearing plant quarantine was the biggest hurdle

Importing fruit into Japan is subject to strict regulation under the Plant Protection Act of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. For lychee, treatment to prevent the entry of "fruit flies" was a mandatory condition.

Vietnam introduced vapor heat treatment technology, establishing a method that eliminates pests inside the fruit while preserving quality. Gaining approval for this treatment opened the way to lifting the import ban.

Balancing air freight with freshness

Early exports to Japan relied mainly on air freight. It takes about 6 to 8 hours from northern Vietnam to Narita or Kansai airports. With proper pre-cooling and temperature control, the fruit reaches Japanese consumers within 3 to 5 days of harvest.

Fresh lychee has taut red skin and a strong aroma. Building a system that can deliver the fruit in this condition is a major reason it earned the trust of Japanese buyers.

Making use of the Japan-Vietnam EPA

Under the Japan-Vietnam Economic Partnership Agreement (VJEPA), which took effect in 2009, tariff rates on agricultural products were lowered in stages. Preferential tariffs applied to lychee as well, strengthening its price competitiveness. This institutional support was an important factor behind the expansion of exports.

The front line of freshness-preservation technology

Lychee is a fruit that deteriorates very quickly after harvest. Left at room temperature, browning begins within 24 hours and quality drops sharply. To address this, Vietnamese producers and exporters have developed and adopted a range of technologies.

Developing the Cold Chain

Pre-cooling right after harvest is the first step in preserving quality. Lowering the fruit's temperature to 3 to 5°C within two hours of harvest curbs respiration and slows the loss of freshness.

In recent years, within Bac Giang Province, agricultural cooperatives and exporters have built a growing number of cold-storage facilities. The province's total cold-storage capacity has more than tripled over the past five years.

MA packaging (Modified Atmosphere Packaging)

A special film packaging that lowers oxygen and raises carbon dioxide concentrations suppresses the fruit's respiration. This technology keeps the fruit fresh for 2 to 3 days longer than usual.

This MA packaging is used as standard for products exported to Japan.

Challenges with sulfite treatment and alternative technologies

Traditionally, sulfite treatment was common for preventing lychee browning. However, in Japan and in Western markets, residue standards are strict and its use is restricted.

To address this, treatment methods combining hypochlorous acid water washing, hot-water treatment, and naturally derived antioxidants (citric acid and ascorbic acid) have spread. Research and development continues so that quality can be preserved in a form close to no treatment at all.

Diversifying export destinations and market strategy

Vietnam's lychee exports extend not only to Japan but in many directions.

Export destinations

Characteristics

China

Largest market; bulk transport by land and sea

Japan

For high-quality, high-value products; mainly air freight

EU

Phytosanitary requirements met; organic demand as well

The United States

A range of forms including frozen and processed products

Australia

For Asian consumers; demand is growing

Reducing dependence on the Chinese market and advancing into high-value markets such as Japan and the West is a strategy set out in the policy of Vietnam's Ministry of Agriculture as well.

Growing exports to higher-priced markets translate directly into higher incomes for farmers. There are figures showing that the average income of lychee farmers in Bac Giang Province has roughly doubled over the past decade as exports have expanded.

Summary

Lychee from Bac Giang Province, Vietnam, entered the Japanese market on three pillars: brand establishment through geographical indication, meeting phytosanitary requirements, and building a cold chain.

Bac Giang lychee, in season every June and July, is high quality with a sugar content of 18 to 22 degrees, and export volumes are expanding year by year. Thanks to advances in freshness-preservation technology, conditions are increasingly in place for Japanese consumers to enjoy fresh Vietnamese lychee.

For businesses considering food imports, Vietnamese lychee deserves attention as an item that combines quality, price, and stable supply. As production areas continue to improve their techniques and the trade environment between Japan and Vietnam develops further, even greater export growth is expected.

At VN AGRI, we share the latest information on Vietnamese agriculture.

You May Also Like

A thorough explanation of the supply-chain structure of Vietnamese agriculture

The Complete Guide to Vietnamese Superfoods 2026

Vietnam's Coconut Industry: Production and Export Strategy in Ben Tre Province

A detailed explanation of lychee from Bac Giang province, Vietnam, covering production volume, harvest timing, the background to the successful first export to Japan, and freshness-preserving technology.
