Agriculture accounts for about 8 to 9% of Thailand's GDP, and some 30% of its people work in agriculture-related jobs, which is why it is known as the "kitchen of the world." Vietnam, meanwhile, has a population of about 100 million and is an agricultural power where agriculture accounts for about 12% of GDP and more than 40% of the workforce is engaged in farming.

There are interesting differences in the two countries' agricultural structures. Thailand's farmland averages about 3 hectares per household, whereas the average cultivated area of a Vietnamese farm is about 0.44 hectares, among the smallest in the ASEAN countries. This difference in scale has a major impact on productivity and export strategy.

This article explains in detail the eight strengths of Thai agriculture, which lies at the core of Southeast Asian agriculture. From the production situation of major crops to export strategy and the latest push for smart agriculture, we analyze the distinctiveness and competitiveness of Thai agriculture.

[Strength 1] A world-class rice exporter

Rice production lies at the core of Thai agriculture.

The central plain of the Chao Phraya River basin is one of the world's leading granaries, where large-scale rice farming makes use of vast, flat land. Jasmine rice (khao hom mali) in particular is highly regarded on the international market as Thailand's flagship high-quality rice.

Looking at Southeast Asia as a whole, Vietnam is also a major rice export producer. Vietnam's annual rice production is about 43.5 million tonnes and its export volume ranks second in the world, with the Mekong Delta accounting for more than half of the country's rice output as one of the world's leading production regions. When, in 1986, the Doi Moi policy reforms granted land-use rights to individual farmers and introduced a market economy, agricultural production expanded dramatically, and in 1989 the country became a net rice exporter for the first time.

Through a quality-focused strategy, Thai rice production is strengthening its competitiveness in the premium market. On the Khorat Plateau in the northeast, rainfed rice farming is widespread and forms Thailand's largest agricultural area, where productivity is being improved through the development of irrigation facilities.

Against the backdrop of rising global food demand, Thailand's rice export will remain an important source of foreign-currency earnings for years to come.

[Strength 2] Among the world's largest in natural rubber production and export

Thailand holds a position among the world's largest in both natural rubber production and export volume.

Vast rubber plantations spread across the south, mainly on the Malay Peninsula side. In addition to industrial uses such as the automotive industry, the recent rise in demand for medical gloves has provided a tailwind, and Thailand's rubber industry continues to grow steadily.

Natural rubber production is an important source of income for farmers in southern Thailand. Farmland averages about 3 hectares per household, slightly larger than in neighboring countries such as Vietnam, and is characterized by a long commercial history of farming history. This advantage of scale enables efficient production and stable supply.

In response to rising global environmental awareness, a shift toward sustainable rubber production is also underway. A strategy that maintains long-term competitiveness while balancing forest conservation and agricultural production is called for.

Source Japan's Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, "Overview of Thailand's Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries" Compiled from the FY2023 update

[Strength 3] World-class export volume of processed chicken products

Thailand has established a world-class position in the export of processed chicken processed chicken products.

Many of the chicken products sold in Japanese convenience stores are from Thailand. Through advanced processing technology and strict quality control, Thailand's chicken industry has earned trust in the international market.

The strength of Thailand's chicken industry lies in a value chain integrated from upstream to downstream. Feed production, poultry raising, meat processing, frozen and chilled logistics, and export are all managed in an integrated way, achieving both efficiency and quality. Its freezing technology and cold chain in particular are among the most advanced in Southeast Asia.

A quality-control system that meets the hygiene standards of major export destinations such as Japan, the EU, and the United States is also a source of the Thai chicken industry's competitiveness. By obtaining international certifications and introducing traceability systems, it is strengthening trust in food safety.

[Strength 4] Production and export of diverse tropical fruits

Thailand is a treasure trove of tropical fruits.

A wide variety of tropical fruits are produced, including mango, durian, mangosteen, rambutan, longan, papaya, banana, and pineapple. Durian in particular is known as the "king of fruits," and in recent years its export value has grown sharply thanks to surging demand in the Chinese market.

Thailand's fruit industry does not stop at mere production but also puts effort into processing and adding value. A variety of processed products such as dried fruit, freeze-dried products, and fruit-juice drinks are sold on the international market. This reduces the spoilage risk that accompanies fresh-fruit export and opens access to a wider market.

Across Southeast Asia as a whole, Vietnam too boasts the world's second-largest coffee production after Brazil, and is the largest producer of Robusta. Cashew nuts and black pepper rank first in the world, while shrimp ranks third in the world in production volume and second in exports. Vietnam's total agriculture, forestry, and fisheries exports reached about US$53 billion in 2023, accounting for more than 15% of the country's total exports.

[Strength 5] Proactive adoption of smart agriculture

The Thai government positions the adoption of smart agriculture as a national priority.

Various technologies are being demonstrated around the country, including environmental monitoring with IoT sensors, pesticide spraying by drones, AI-based pest and disease prediction, and the automation of hydroponic cultivation. Around Bangkok, the use of precision agriculture and drones is spreading, and improving the efficiency of farming and reducing environmental impact are being pursued at the same time.

The adoption of smart agriculture is also expected to serve as a solution to labor shortages. With young people continuing to move to the cities, securing the next generation of farmers is an urgent issue. The aim is to build a system that can maintain high productivity with fewer hands through automation and labor-saving technologies.

Vietnam faces similar challenges. 97% of all farm workers are small and medium-scale farmers, about 57% of agricultural laborers are unskilled, and the share aged 50 and over has reached about 43%, meaning the workforce is aging. The Vietnamese government has set out its "Strategy for Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Development to 2030, with a Vision to 2050," positioning the adoption of smart agriculture as a national priority.

Source JICA, "Report on the Basic Information Collection and Confirmation Survey on Promoting Smart Agriculture in Thailand" Compiled from the March 2023 edition

[Strength 6] The shift to organic agriculture and sustainability

Thailand is one of the Southeast Asian countries where the institutional framework for organic agriculture is most developed.

A certification system is operated under the Thai organic agriculture standard, and the Thai government positions organic rice exports as a growth strategy. It is actively promoting organic cultivation of jasmine rice to differentiate itself in the premium market.

The "Japan-ASEAN Midori Cooperation Plan," adopted at the Japan-ASEAN Ministers' Meeting on Agriculture and Forestry in May 2023, is a comprehensive cooperation framework aimed at building sustainable agriculture and food systems in the Asian monsoon region. Thailand is advancing the adoption of technologies that reduce environmental impact and the expansion of organic agriculture as a core partner within this framework.

The shift to organic agriculture comes with challenges such as a temporary drop in yields and the cost of obtaining certification. However, against the backdrop of rising demand for organic produce on the international market, it is expected to raise farmers' incomes over the long term. Efforts are underway to build mechanisms that support the transition through both technical assistance and economic incentives.

Source Japan's Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, "Report on the Overseas Expansion of Smart Agriculture Technology" Compiled from the above (March 2020).

[Strength 7] A strategic agricultural export policy

To cement its position as the "kitchen of the world," Thailand pursues a strategic agricultural export policy.

The elimination of intra-regional tariffs under the ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA) and participation in the RCEP (Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership) and the CPTPP (Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership) are expanding Thai agricultural products' access to new markets. Exports to the Chinese market in particular are growing rapidly, with major gains in key items such as durian and rubber.

Beyond merely exporting primary commodities, the Thai government places emphasis on expanding exports of processed foods and high-value-added products. It is pursuing a policy built on three pillars, developing the cold chain, attracting investment in food-processing facilities, and strengthening branding, in a shift "from quantity to quality."

Across Southeast Asia as a whole, Indonesia is the world's largest producer of Palm oil, and together with Malaysia accounts for more than 85% of global output. The Philippines holds a leading position in the world in banana exports, but it faces a high risk of severe crop damage from the nearly twenty typhoons that approach or make landfall each year on average, and as the only net rice importer in ASEAN it carries a food-security vulnerability.

[Strength 8] Agricultural cooperation with Japan and business opportunities

Agricultural cooperation between Japan and Thailand is entering a new phase.

Japan positions the international rollout of the environmental-impact-reducing technologies set out in its "Strategy for Sustainable Food Systems (MIDORI)" with ASEAN, including Thailand, as its most important partner. The pillars are the transfer of precision-agriculture technology, support for promoting organic agriculture, the introduction of paddy-management techniques to cut greenhouse-gas emissions, and support for upgrading agricultural value chains.

Japan's strength lies in its technologies and know-how suited to small and medium-scale farmers. Thailand's farmland averages about 3 hectares per household, and unlike the smart-agriculture solutions of the Netherlands or South Korea, which assume large-scale farming, Japanese agricultural technology is highly likely to fit Thailand's realities.

For Japanese companies, Southeast Asian agriculture is a major business opportunity. There are many fields where their technology and know-how can be put to use: adding value through the drying and powdering of produce, rolling out smart-agriculture technology, supporting organic certification, and helping build cold chains. The Thai government's proactive policy of attracting foreign investment also encourages Japanese companies to enter.

Vietnam faces serious structural challenges: low added value, an underdeveloped cold chain, the low productivity and aging of small-scale farmers, and food-safety and environmental problems. There is ample room for Japan's technology and know-how to contribute to solving these challenges.

Summary: the future of Southeast Asian agriculture and Thailand's role

Thai agriculture boasts world-class production and export performance, while at the same time building a next-generation farming model through the adoption of smart agriculture, the shift to organic farming, and the upgrading of value chains.

To maintain and strengthen its position as the "kitchen of the world," Thailand is accelerating its shift from quantity to quality. Armed with a diverse range of produce highly regarded on the international market, such as jasmine rice, natural rubber, processed chicken, and tropical fruit, it aims to build a sustainable agricultural system.

Across Southeast Asia as a whole, countries such as Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines, Cambodia, Myanmar, and Laos each have their own strengths while facing common challenges: vulnerability to climate change, the agriculture-industry gap and the outflow of labor, and ensuring food safety and traceability.

For Japanese companies, Southeast Asian agriculture is an attractive market where their technology and know-how can be put to use. By making use of the Japan-ASEAN agricultural cooperation framework and combining each side's strengths, new business opportunities will emerge.

The development of Southeast Asian agriculture contributes to global food security and economic growth. Watching the process of its transformation closely and engaging with it proactively should carry important meaning for future business in Asia.

You May Also Like

What is Thailand's chicken-processing and export business?
