For Japanese food buyers and trading companies, this is not just the story of a single farm. As major retailers such as AEON build ASC into their sourcing policies, certified origins become easier to shortlist in negotiations for Japan and the EU. However, as noted below, attaching an ASC label to a product requires separately confirming certification on the processing and distribution side.

A Ca Mau shrimp-farming cooperative obtained ASC certification for two shrimp species

The certified HTX Thanh Dat is a shrimp-farming cooperative in Ca Mau province in which multiple producers take part. According to the cooperative overview the magazine reports, the scope covers two species, whiteleg (vannamei) and black tiger, with the EU, the United States, Japan, Australia, and South Korea listed as supply destinations. DNV's announcement also gives concrete figures for farming area, number of participating households, and annual output, but these are figures that rely on the certification body's announcement and have not been cross-checked against other third-party statistics. Figures on scale that directly bear on supply capacity are, as noted below, items that buyers themselves should verify firsthand, so this article reads primarily around the fact of certification and the covered species.

The ASC Farm Standard is a framework that audits farm management and impact on the natural environment, the health and welfare of the farmed species (shrimp), and the human rights of workers and local communities, along four principles: the farm, the fish, the people, and the environment. Tran Thanh Trieu, the cooperative's chairman and representative, commented that "obtaining ASC Farm Standard certification is an important milestone for our cooperative."

Why ASC certification becomes a "passport" to Japan and the EU

Rachel Ng, Food & Beverage Manager for DNV in Southeast Asia and Oceania, issued a comment to the effect that responsible aquaculture starts at the farm level and that certification to the ASC Farm Standard provides an independent third-party assessment. This character of "third-party assessment" is what takes effect in procurement settings in Japan and Europe.

AEON's sourcing policy narrows the entrance

Japan's major retailers and restaurant chains hold up MSC (wild) and ASC (farmed) as certifications demonstrating the sustainability of seafood in their sourcing policies. AEON expanded ASC/MSC-compatible sales floors early on and has gradually increased its handling of certified seafood. From a buyer's standpoint, the presence or absence of certification becomes a first-pass screen for "whether it can go on the shelf." There are sales floors and product groups where certification has become a de facto prerequisite, and cases arise where a non-certified product drops off the shortlist.

The origins of certified Vietnamese shrimp are still limited

Vietnamese shrimp holds a major position in supply to Japan, but farms that have already obtained the ASC Farm Standard remain a fraction of the whole. Certified origins gain room to be chosen on a different axis—meeting requirements—one step away from the arena of competing on price alone. For buyers, even among the same Vietnamese shrimp, the "certified" group has one more entry point to negotiations.

Vietnam's shrimp exports are growing, but the content of that growth is split

According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), shrimp export value for January–July 2026 was about US$2.8 billion, up 13.5% year on year, and July alone was US$451.5 million, up 10.1% year on year. The value exceeds the prior year, but July was slightly below June's US$458.2 million. The macro figures show growth, but they do not reveal the content market by market.

Indicator

Figure (as originally stated)

Year on year

Source

Shrimp export value (Jan–Jul)

About US$2.8 billion

+13.5%

VASEP

Shrimp export value (July alone)

US$451.5 million

+10.1%

VASEP

What buyers require differs between markets that compete on price and markets where products are chosen for certification or quality. For trading partners that make sustainability certification a requirement, as in the EU and Japan, ASC certification becomes one of the preconditions of negotiation. Relatedly, the case in which Godaco moved into Asia as shrimp to the US stalled illustrates the structure in which a shrinking price market prompts a shift to high-requirement markets, and obtaining certification overlaps with the conditions that push that shift along.

Checkpoints for Japanese buyers to turn certification into "usable material"

In practice, taking the phrase "obtained ASC certification" at face value can trip you up. Certification exists in two separate parts, the Farm Standard and the Chain of Custody (CoC) for processing and distribution, and even if a farm is certified, the final product cannot carry an ASC label unless the CoC is connected at each processing and export stage.

Keep the Farm Standard and CoC in mind as separate things

The first thing a buyer should confirm is to look up ASC's official certification database by certification number and check whether the covered farm, covered species, and expiry date match their own inquiry. In the case of HTX Thanh Dat, inquire directly with the cooperative or exporter—firsthand, not leaving it to the trading company—as to whether both vannamei and black tiger match the species in your inquiry and whether there is the available supply volume and harvest plan to cover the lots you need.

Line up the items to verify firsthand, first

Item to confirm

Where and how to verify

What happens if overlooked

Certification number and expiry date

Cross-check in ASC's official certification database

Mistaking a lapsed or out-of-scope farm as valid

Covered species

As stated on the certificate (vannamei / black tiger)

The species in your inquiry turned out to be uncertified

CoC (processing and distribution)

Confirm the CoC certification of each processor and exporter

The final product cannot carry an ASC label

Supply volume

Inquire with the cooperative or exporter about available supply and harvest plans

The contract falls through because the lot is not met

This verification, the situation in which the main markets for Vietnamese shrimp are being reshuffled toward Australia and South Korea, gains meaning when read together. In a phase where the supply side is re-choosing whom to sell to, buyers who can meet certification requirements are more likely to have negotiating room on conditions other than price.

Breaking away from a shrimp monoculture, and the scarcity value of certified origins

Vietnam's seafood sector is diversifying away from dependence on shrimp, in a phase in which exports of crab and shellfish are growing at double-digit rates As the range of items widens, selection within shrimp—"which origin, which certification"—grows finer. Certified origins are set apart from the tier that competes on volume and can aim for shelves in Japan and the EU with requirement compliance as their weapon.

Ca Mau province is a major shrimp-producing area in the Mekong Delta, with factories of major processing companies also clustered there. A build-up of certified farms in an origin creates a foundation that makes it easier to align everything from processing to export to ASC compliance in one piece. From the Japanese side, a movement in which the depth of certification increases at the origin level carries more weight as material for stable sourcing than a one-off certification.

The next move is to cross-check one certification number yourself

If you are considering certified Vietnamese shrimp, the first action to take is concrete. Take one ASC certification number from the certificate presented by a trading candidate, cross-check it yourself in ASC's official certification database, and confirm the covered species, expiry date, and covered farm. In a phase where origin-level certification is building up, as with HTX Thanh Dat, buyers who make this firsthand verification a habit are more likely to gain the upper hand in negotiations with the supply side, to the extent they can demonstrate requirement compliance. You cannot control shrimp prices or tariff swings, but verifying certification is something you can start with your own hands today.

Information referenced

Vietnam Fisheries Magazine, "DNV certifies HTX Thanh Dat to the ASC Farm Standard" (dated August 24, 2026)

VASEP (Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers) shrimp export statistics

The shrimp-farming cooperative HTX Thanh Dat in Ca Mau province has obtained ASC Farm Standard certification from DNV.
