According to reporting by the local agricultural magazine Nong nghiep Moi truong on 26 July 2026, it is positioned as the first commercial cultivation in the north-central region; it has already harvested more than 4 tonnes and expects 7–8 tonnes over the season. Buyers are limited to one or two companies in Ho Chi Minh City. This rare chili, for which domestic demand is still thin, can be a niche ingredient with large supply headroom for Japanese firms handling hot sauce and spices.

Habanero is a high-value variety premised on processing and export

Habanero is a flagship among super-hot varieties, and the quality of its aroma and heat creates demand worldwide as a raw material for hot sauce, seasonings, and spice processing. Its price band and uses differ from the red chili common in Vietnam (a fresh commodity). The significance of the Phu Ha cooperative taking it up as the first commercial cultivation in the north-central region lies in choosing not low-unit-price fresh chili but a high-value variety premised on processing and export. Cultivation relies almost not at all on chemical pesticides, using a biologically derived pesticide just once at the flowering and fruiting stage and no chemical pesticides thereafter. It is a design conscious of export markets' residue standards, not aimed solely at domestic consumption from the start.

7–8 tonnes on 0.7 ha, with one or two Ho Chi Minh companies buying the whole crop

It can be harvested about every 10 days, and its feature is a continuous-harvest trait that yields on roughly a weekly cycle at peak. The produce is under contract for one or two companies in Ho Chi Minh City to buy the entire amount.

Item

Figure

Yen equivalent (1 yen ≈ 170 VND)

Sale unit price

about 170,000 VND/kg

about 1,000 yen/kg

Cultivated area

0.7ha

—

Harvest result / projection

more than 4 tonnes / 7–8 tonnes in total

—

Harvest frequency

about every 10 days (weekly at peak)

—

Domestic buyers

one or two companies in Ho Chi Minh City

—

All are based on the same Nong nghiep Moi truong article. The yen conversion is an estimate and is a fresh-basis price. The effective unit price changes with the processed form, such as dried, paste, or powder.

Buyers and the thinness of refrigeration are the ceiling on scale

The challenges the reporting raises are clear: damage from pests such as rats, losses after harvest due to insufficient cold storage, and the limiting of buyer companies to one or two. Although the cultivation itself is strong against pests and diseases and the unit price is high, the thinness of buyers and storage is the ceiling on scale. Turned around, with a stable buyer and a primary-processing receiver in place, there is ample room to expand the area. Habanero's heat component is strong, so even a small amount can bring up a product's heat and aroma; moving it in a concentrated form such as dried or paste, rather than flowing large volumes fresh, suits logistics and economics better. The shortage of cold-storage equipment, flipped around, means room remains for whoever installs primary-processing equipment to take the initiative. A yield scale of 7–8 tonnes on 0.7 ha is a handy size to first run a processing demonstration.

Still-unfilled supply headroom is open to Japanese firms

In Japan's hot-sauce and spice market, habanero depends on imported raw material. Fresh import faces high walls of quarantine and freshness, but habanero shows its true worth as a processed good. Dried, frozen, puree, or powder, it can be handled year-round as a raw material for sauces and seasonings. The current situation, with only one or two buyers in Ho Chi Minh, is a challenge for the producing area but means unfilled supply headroom for a newly entering Japanese firm. The 0.7-ha scale is small, but the cultivation attribute of near-zero chemical pesticides is a favorable starting point for Japan's strict residue-standard acceptance inspections.

The move to turn niche, high-unit-price raw materials into producing areas is continuous in this region. In the same Ha Tinh province, mung beans sold out at the field at high prices and native-bee honey that sells at 8 times bulk have competed on unit price rather than volume. The high-value shift of chili is just beginning, and, like a 200-ha organic pepper complex in Dong Nai aiming at European export, the trend of lifting spices from cheap bulk to certified high value is growing thicker in Vietnam. Turning habanero into a producing area is the frontier where that trend has begun to reach chili as well.

What to confirm is the thinness of cold storage and purchasing capacity

If making contact, the window is the Phu Ha cooperative. It is realistic to start from trial transactions not in fresh form but in a primary-processed form such as dried, frozen, or puree. Since the shortage of cold storage is generating losses, confirm early whether there is an on-the-ground primary-processing setup, and whether records and residue-test data backing the use of biological pesticides can be submitted. Because a 0.7-ha scale cannot immediately meet Japan's mass-production demand, assess the plan for area expansion and how far the number of buyers supporting it will grow. Put the other way, if the Japanese side steps forward as a stable taker, it can stand in the position of backing the producing area's area expansion. Precisely because buyers are thin now, there is large negotiating room to build in terms.

Sources

Nong nghiep Moi truong, 'Giong ot gia 170 nghin dong/kg, chong chiu sau benh cuc tot' (26 July 2026)

[1,22,88
496,494,497,477,495

post-1412","industry_news","type-industry_news","status-publish","hentry","category-vietnam-agri","category-export","category-spices","tag-496","tag-494","tag-497","tag-477","tag-495
["GET
