The 8th International Symposium on Cage Aquaculture in Asia (CAA8), held at Nha Trang University from July 15 to 18, 2026, set as its theme "green and smart cage aquaculture" and put technologies such as HDPE (high-density polyethylene) cages, IoT environmental monitoring, and AI-driven automatic feeding at center stage. Vietnam's sea-surface farming is trying to shift its footing from catching a lot to raising cleanly and uniformly; for Japanese seafood buyers, this is a sign that the quality of sourced goods will change over several years.

Twenty countries in Nha Trang, with a theme of green and smart

CAA8 was hosted by the Asian Fisheries Society and co-hosted by Nha Trang University, Shanghai Ocean University, the China-ASEAN joint research base for marine aquaculture technology, and others. Participants numbered 250, of whom roughly 150 came from overseas, with about 20 countries represented. During the session period, panels were organized on technological innovation, breeding improvement, nutrition, environmental sustainability, and fish-disease management, and new fields such as offshore farming systems, selective breeding, AI, IoT, carbon neutrality, and value-chain management also came up for discussion.

Liu Liping, president of the Asian Fisheries Society, said Vietnam is showing "remarkable progress" in introducing advanced technology into offshore farming. The choice of Nha Trang (Khanh Hoa Province), the center of central Vietnam's sea-surface farming, as the venue is likely because this land leads in the implementation of offshore farming.

Why green and smart, and why now

Behind the conference is Vietnam's national strategy for sea-surface farming toward 2030. On the principles of "transparency, responsibility, and sustainability," the direction is to shift to large-scale, industrial, environmentally conscious farming with advanced technology, with targets nationwide of 300,000 hectares of farming area, 12 million cubic meters of cage volume, 1.45 million tonnes of production, and US$1.8-2 billion a year in exports.

Running at the front is Khanh Hoa Province. The province has set a target of converting conventional cages to 100% HDPE cages and offshore industrial farming by 2030, and aims within the province for 1,500 hectares of sea-surface farming, 30,000 tonnes of production, and US$1 billion in exports. Off Nha Trang, at Hon Noi and Dam Bay, fishers began raising sea-surface fish 6 nautical miles offshore, a first in the country. CAA8 became a venue for bringing together the next technologies on this land where implementation is advancing.

Vietnam's sea-surface farming, by the numbers, where it has reached

Lining up the national targets with the targets of front-running Khanh Hoa Province shows what scale Vietnam is aiming for.

Item

National target (2030)

Khanh Hoa Province target (2030)

Farming area

300,000 hectares

1,500 hectares

Cage volume

12 million cubic meters

-

Output

1.45 million tonnes

30,000 tonnes

Export value

US$1.8-2 billion a year

US$1 billion

Cage direction

Toward offshore and industrial

Convert conventional cages to 100% HDPE

Khanh Hoa Province alone sets out an amount close to half the national export target, which suggests this province is the driver of the country's sea-surface farming.

What do HDPE cages, IoT, and AI change

The technologies lined up at the conference each connect directly to the quality of farmed fish. We organize the key points.

HDPE cages: compared with conventional types that use wood or drums as floats, the material lasts longer (locally said to be 50 years) and withstands typhoons and high waves. Because cages can be put out to offshore locations with depth and good tidal flow, water quality is stable and the fish's growing environment becomes uniform.

IoT environmental monitoring: water temperature, dissolved oxygen, and salinity are recorded constantly by sensors. Early detection of abnormalities can reduce die-offs, and the rearing-history data remains. This becomes the foundation for the traceability the import side demands.

AI automatic feeding: it optimizes feed amount while watching the fish's appetite. It curbs water-quality deterioration from overfeeding and can narrow variation in shipping size.

Khanh Hoa Province's mainstay farmed fish, grouper, cobia, trevally-type fish, and the lobster that is the signboard of cage farming, are all species that readily benefit from offshore HDPE conversion and data management. The course by which live lobster exports to China grew into an earner for Vietnamese fisheries was touched on in a separate piece (Live lobster nears US$1 billion: how China changed the way Vietnamese seafood earns), and the current of raising up that quality with offshore farming and data lies on the extension of this conference.

What it means for Japanese procurement

Reading this move from a Japanese sourcing perspective, three practical benefits come into view.

First, Uniformity of size and freshness. Stable offshore water quality and AI feeding narrow variation in shipping size. Yield per lot becomes easier to read, and it becomes easier to handle in processing and retail settings. Second, Traceability. A farm where rearing history remains through IoT can readily present records of origin, feeding, and water quality. In Japan's trade, where explanation of raw-material origin is demanded, this becomes the entry point to a deal. Third, Leveling of supply. Species that rely on the wild swing in intake with the fishing conditions, but offshore farming approaches planned production. It becomes easier to set annual contracts and fixed-volume sourcing.

Japan has long been a buyer of Vietnamese seafood, but it is moving to a stage of exchanging raw materials and raising quality with technology (The era of Japan merely buying is ending; Japan and Vietnam enter a stage of circulating raw material to each other in seafood). The cage technologies shared at CAA8 tell us where the room lies to build quality together. Feeding design, fish-disease management, and selective breeding are areas where the Japanese side's knowledge can enter.

Spillover to the market, and the next few years

HDPE conversion and the move offshore cost money. The initial investment to replace conventional cages is heavy for small-scale fishing households, and the 100% conversion target may not proceed as planned. Turned around, the farms that finish the conversion first can set themselves apart in quality and production stability. For Japanese buyers, telling which production areas and which farming companies have already implemented HDPE conversion and data management becomes the sourcing eye going forward.

There is also room to apply to sea-surface fish the same thinking as the case where Japan stepped in as the largest buyer all the way to building a processing hub, like scallops (Vietnamese scallops become Japan's largest buyer: how a processing hub opens a new sourcing route). If the floor of quality rises through offshore farming, the Japanese side's uses also widen to live fish, fillets, and processed products.

CAA8 overview

Conference name

8th International Symposium on Cage Aquaculture in Asia (CAA8)

Theme

Green and smart development of cage aquaculture in Asia

Dates

July 15-18, 2026

Venue

Nha Trang University (Nha Trang, Khanh Hoa Province)

Organizers

Asian Fisheries Society (AFS) / Nha Trang University and others, co-hosted

Participation

250 people (of whom about 150 from overseas, about 20 countries)

Main technology themes

HDPE cages / IoT environmental monitoring / AI automatic feeding / selective breeding / fish-disease management

Summary: make the production area's level of implementation a sourcing yardstick

CAA8 was a conference marking a turning point as Vietnam's sea-surface farming turns the rudder from volume to quality. The national target is 1.45 million tonnes of production and US$1.8-2 billion a year in exports by 2030, and front-running Khanh Hoa Province sets out 100% HDPE conversion of conventional cages. The one move Japanese seafood buyers can make now is to confirm in concrete terms how far candidate supplier production areas have implemented offshore HDPE conversion, IoT recording, and AI feeding. Farms that have advanced implementation have the strengths of uniform size and origin history, which are easy to handle in Japan's trade. When taking quotes for lobster or grouper, start by adding a line item for the cage type and whether rearing data can be presented.

References: VOV English／Vietnam News

The CAA8 international conference in Nha Trang, which gathered about 20 Asian countries.
