In Dak Lak province in the Central Highlands, contract production with technical guidance, in which engineers from an input maker enter farmers' fields and accompany them weekly from the trees' recovery period to fruiting, is spreading. At one farm, yield nearly doubled in a single season. For Japanese food buyers aiming for stable ingredient procurement, it is a development that offers a new yardstick for gauging a growing area's capability.

The input maker stopped at sell-and-done

The starting point is a production-support model run by the Dak Lak branch of the agricultural input company Nông Hóa Xanh. The company not only delivers fertilizer but sends engineers to the site at each stage of cultivation, from restoring tree vigor to flower-bud treatment and the management of fruiting. Visits are weekly, and if fruit drop or poor growth appears, countermeasures are shown at once. Nguyễn Hữu Cường, who heads the branch, explains the core of this system as lowering farmers' psychological burden and production risk.

Although Dak Lak is Vietnam's second-largest durian growing area, it has not been long since official exports to China got into full swing. The planted area expanded rapidly, but it has carried the challenge that technique varies widely from farmer to farmer, so yield and quality are not stable. A form in which the seller of inputs takes responsibility for the cultivation process itself is one answer to this instability.

Working at each stage, from recovery to fruiting

The guidance moves as one with fertilization design. At the soil-building stage, organic fertilizers such as sheep and bat manure are applied, and at the fruiting stage, bio-derived inputs such as Biofuvat and Biofruit, with the timing and amount specified. The aim is not to increase volume but to apply just what is needed when it is needed and reduce wasteful fertilizing. Because farmers are handed when, what, and how much to apply as a process, it becomes easier to reproduce the same quality every season without relying on experience or intuition.

This idea of distilling technique into a process appears in a different form in the adjacent Mekong Delta too. In Can Tho, skilled producers a billionaire-farmer club that shares know-how rather than hoarding it have built, working to lift the whole growing area. Whether the practitioners turn to teaching technique, or an input maker accompanies them, the entry points differ, but the current of moving a growing area's quality from individual skill to a system is shared.

Results visible through named farmers

The effect shows in concrete figures. On the field of Y Thinh Byă, who grows 45 durian trees in the Tan An area, 7-year-old harvest trees set over 100 fruits each, and yield that was about 4 tonnes in 2025 is projected to double to about 8 tonnes in 2026. Thoang Ayun, in the same area and in the third year of adopting the model, has come to be able to sell high-quality fruit at VND 64,000 per kg (about ¥380, converting at about ¥60 to VND 10,000). Trần Văn Huân, in the Ea Knuec area, holds 140 young trees in addition to about 60 harvest trees, and has stepped into stable supply after making quality uniform.

Farmer

Scale

Main results

Y Thinh Byă

7 years old, 45 trees

Yield about 4 tonnes to about 8 tonnes (projected doubling)

Thoang Ayun

5 sao, third year of adoption

High-quality fruit sold at VND 64,000/kg

Trần Văn Huân

60 harvest trees plus 140 young trees

Toward stable supply with uniform quality

Across the province as a whole, Dak Lak's durian cultivation area is about 41,000 ha, of which about 30,000 ha have entered the harvest period, and 2026 output is projected to reach 500,000 tonnes. If yield and quality in a growing area of this scale are lifted through process management, the readability of supply changes greatly.

How it counts for Japanese sourcing

What has troubled Japanese buyers handling Vietnamese durian is that ripeness and taste waver lot by lot even for the same growing area and the same variety. Technical-accompaniment contract production is an effort to curb this waver at the field stage. When choosing a supplier, adding whether there is an input partner managing the cultivation process to your confirmation points, not just area and export track record, makes it easier to see through to the reproducibility of quality.

Another takeaway is that a design that pares down fertilization leads to added value. A process that reduces wasteful fertilizer and raises quality also sits well with the transparency of cultivation records. Vietnam is advancing, for durian, a long-term export design through growing-area codes, and cultivation management at the farmer level becomes, as is, the foundation for the traceability that the procurement side requires. The more a growing area keeps records of technical guidance, the more confidently the Japanese side can step into long-term contracts.

Competition between growing areas moves to the quality of accompaniment

Dak Lak, province-wide, is pushing its growing-area brand with a first durian festival and is shifting its weight from expanding volume to a contest of quality and reputation. At its feet, it is not to be missed that moves in which input makers accompany farmers and raise yield and quality at the same time are piling up. As the criterion for choosing a growing area moves from how much they can produce to how uniformly they can produce, the depth of technical accompaniment will surface as a difference in growing areas' capability.

The next move for Japanese food buyers is to ask candidate growing areas concretely about their cultivation-support setup. Who enters the field, at which stage, and how often? The resolution of that answer is directly linked to the stability of the lots.

Sources

Dân Việt, 'What is it that reassures Dak Lak's durian farmers?'

[1,103,85
["post-1351","industry_news","type-industry_news","status-publish","hentry","category-vietnam-agri","category-tech-innovation","category-fruits
["GET
