It is a picture in which Chinese demand passed its peak and returned to normal levels, and this season's increased output overlapped there. But reading this only as a "price collapse" misses the real change now underway. This very phase of cheap fresh fruit is one in which exports of processed goods such as frozen and dried are growing, and for Japanese import and sourcing managers it is also a timing when purchasing options widen. The current overall picture, with fresh fruit and processed goods moving in opposite directions, is The oversupply scene where retail prices of watermelon and Ri6 durian diverge from the region's rock-bottom prices is also contiguous with this. This article follows the matter from the reality of prices, to the region's move to steer toward processing, and to the move the Japanese side can make.

Over 10% in a few days: the wholesale-price fall that progressed by variety

Putting together the accounts of local merchants and cooperatives, the extent of the decline clearly divides by variety and grade. Tran Van Cuong, a buying merchant in Dong Nai Province, says, "It fell by VND 2,000–3,000 per kg in a few days, and the bottom is not yet in sight." The export mainstay, Thai variety (Monthong type) grade A, went from the previous VND 70,000–90,000 per kg to VND 59,000–67,000. In yen terms, taking VND 10,000 as about 60 yen, that is a level of roughly 350–400 yen/kg.

The Ri6 variety, which tends to go to domestic consumption and frozen processing, is even lower. It fell to VND 34,000–38,000 for grade A and VND 19,000–22,000 for grade B, well below the same period last year. In parts of the Mekong Delta, some areas fell to a level one-third of the same period last year. Looking only at fresh fruit, the figures are harsh, but it is worth grasping that what is falling is mainly the price of the route of "carrying it fresh to China."

A lull in demand, increased output, and tighter inspections overlapped

There is not just one reason for the fall. First, China's last-minute demand around the Dragon Boat Festival settled down, and buying returned to normal operation. Second, domestic durian output in Vietnam rose 20–30% year on year, and abundant supply came together in the full season. Combined with a quality decline in southern Thai product, the market as a whole is tilting toward oversupply.

In addition, as Chinese customs inspections became stricter and clearance took longer, fresh fruit, for which freshness is everything, has been forced to stall. Because China still accounts for about 90% of the export destinations for Vietnamese fresh durian as the largest market, its every move directly affects region prices. Conversely, this episode has once again made visible the structure in which dependence on a single market and a single form (fresh fruit only) pushes price swings straight onto farmers.

In numbers: the divergence of fresh fruit and processing

While fresh fruit falls, processed goods are clearly pointing up. January–March 2026 durian exports recorded about US$221.7 million, up 230% year on year, and what drove that growth was frozen durian. Lining up the average unit prices of fresh fruit and processed goods makes the difference in value clear at a glance.

Category

Price and volume (2026)

Notes

Thai variety grade A (fresh fruit, region wholesale)

VND 59,000–67,000/kg

Previously VND 70,000–90,000

Ri6 variety grade A (fresh fruit, region wholesale)

VND 34,000–38,000/kg

Grade B is VND 19,000–22,000

Average export price of fresh durian

About US$3,095/tonne

Down 9.2% year on year

Average export price of frozen durian

About US$4,300/tonne

About 39% above fresh fruit

The frozen export volume itself is also expanding rapidly. Frozen durian exports, which were a little over 4,600 tonnes in 2024, swelled roughly 20-fold to over 91,000 tonnes in 2025. In the first quarter of 2026 alone, against 68,500 tonnes of fresh, frozen was about 11,600 tonnes. In terms of growth rate, processed goods have far more momentum than fresh fruit, whose price is falling.

The region moving from "fresh as is" to "process and ship"

Picking up voices from the field, even amid a falling market, eyes are already on the next move.

Phan Nhat Tam, president of Quoi Phong Farm, reveals that his buying volume, once 70–80 tonnes a day, has fallen to 15–20 tonnes, and exports have dropped from 3–4 containers a day to one container every 2–3 days. He is the party who most keenly feels the fragility of relying on fresh fruit alone.

Dang Thi Thuy Nga, chairwoman of the Xuan Dinh Agricultural Cooperative, speaks of the difficulty of reading fresh-fruit trading: "We have no choice but to adjust to the market's movements. A buying plan decided the day before changes the next day."

Dang Phuc Nguyen, Secretary General of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, sees the market settling once the supply-demand balance returns. In fact, companies are advancing investment plans in deep processing less swayed by price fluctuations, such as IQF (individual quick freezing) and freeze-drying.

Also in the background is the growth of markets other than China, with frozen durian exports to South Korea up 262% and to the US up over 107%. Because of their shelf life and ease of logistics, processed goods are becoming a receptacle that dilutes single-market dependence. The trend of the region moving to a "process and ship out" stage An analysis tracking in numbers the change in export structure where frozen exploded 20-fold also matches this.

Three things Japanese sourcing managers should read in this current phase

How can Japanese import, retail, and food-processing managers make use of the news of a fresh-fruit crash? There are three key points.

First, the ease of sourcing unique to processed goods. Fresh durian has large constraints of freshness, smell, and transport cost, making it hard to put on Japan's supply chain. Frozen and freeze-dried processed goods, on the other hand, are said to keep for 18–24 months in storage at minus 18 degrees, making them far easier to handle in terms of shelf life and logistics. There is wide room to incorporate them for commercial use—confectionery, baking materials, frozen desserts, topping applications, and the like. Companies that shied away during fresh-fruit price surges can now consider them as stable processing raw material.

Second, the tailwind of a phase of falling raw-material costs. If the region wholesale price of fresh fruit falls, the raw-material cost of the frozen and dried goods that primarily process it also tends to settle for the time being. The portion of China-bound fresh fruit that stalls and stagnates domestically has large room to be diverted to processing. From the buyer's standpoint, teaming up with a processing maker and fixing volume and specifications in advance also serves as a price hedge against the next fresh-fruit price-surge phase. On how to read a reversal in prices, Dak Lak Province's move to steer the region toward a processing cluster is a useful reference.

Third, the importance of identifying supply sources early. The quality of frozen and dried goods varies greatly with the level of IQF equipment and hygiene management. The more a phase of surging export value, the more new entrants there are, and the easier it becomes for the good and the bad to be mixed. It is wise to narrow down now, while prices are settled, to makers that have inspection systems for cadmium and colorants and real cold-chain capability.

Basic specs for sourcing processed durian

Item

Details

Main processing forms

Frozen flesh (IQF) / frozen pulp / freeze-dried

Main varieties

Ri6 variety, Thai variety (Monthong type)

Storage temperature and shelf life

Minus 18 degrees / roughly 18–24 months

Average export price (frozen)

About US$4,300/tonne (about 39% above fresh fruit)

Growing export destinations

South Korea (+262%), the US (over +107%), and others

Assumed applications

Confectionery, frozen desserts, toppings, commercial raw material

Summary—connect through processing while it is "cheap now"

The fall in fresh durian is a painful adjustment for the region, but looking at the market as a whole, it is also a turning point where the center of gravity shifts to processing. While the price of China-bound fresh fruit wavers, frozen and dried are growing in both unit price and volume, and new exits in South Korea and the US are developing. The first move Japanese sourcing managers can make is, while watching the fresh-fruit market out of the corner of the eye, to make contact with frozen and dried processing makers and fix specifications and volume, even on a trial basis. Now, while prices are settled, is also a phase with room to choose supply sources and negotiate terms. Before the next fresh-fruit price surge arrives, it is worth securing one stable window—processed goods.

Sources

Thị trường sầu riêng trước ngã rẽ mới – Bài 1: Giá giảm, doanh nghiệp thận trọng（Nông nghiệp Môi trường）

Durian prices plummet in Mekong Delta on declining China exports（Việt Nam News）

Vietnamese durian exports rise 230% on frozen durian demand（FreshPlaza）

Vietnamese durian exports surge 262%, yet farmers struggle (Asia Daily)

Frozen durian exports: A breakthrough（Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, Vietnam）

[1,85,99
["post-1343","industry_news","type-industry_news","status-publish","hentry","category-vietnam-agri","category-fruits","category-food-processing
["GET
