They have set out a stance of prioritizing produce with quality certification and clear origin labeling. A structure in which supermarkets become sales channels for domestic and cooperative products has come into sharp relief.

Saigon Co.op's 'Accompanying Clean Farm Produce' program

At the end of 2025, Saigon Co.op teamed up with the Ho Chi Minh City Farmers' Association to launch the 'Accompanying Clean Farm Produce' program. It is an effort to distribute VietGAP-, organic- and OCOP-certified produce through its Co.opmart stores. Duong Minh Quang, Deputy General Director of Saigon Co.op, has indicated a policy of expanding this model in stages to the affiliated store network.

Central Retail expands sourcing from cooperatives

Central Retail Vietnam is expanding its 'community livelihood program' that strengthens purchasing from local cooperatives and smallholders. According to the company, it currently runs 11 projects within Vietnam, and procured about 10 tonnes / over VND 330 million (about US$13,000 = about ¥2 million) of produce in the first four months of 2026. It says it prioritizes produce with quality certification, clear origin, OCOP standards and certified growing areas.

Overview of procurement results — data table

Item

Details

Yen conversion

Central Retail number of projects

11 (within Vietnam)

—

Procurement volume (Jan–Apr 2026)

about 10 tonnes

—

Procurement value (same)

over VND 330 million (about US$13,000)

about ¥2 million

Saigon Co.op starting point

Rolled out in Co.opmart stores, expanding to affiliates

—

Note: yen conversions are reference values calculated at about ¥155 to the US dollar.

An industry trend including WinCommerce and others

This move is not limited to Saigon Co.op and Central Retail. Other retail chains such as WinCommerce are also expanding programs that carry OCOP produce and regional specialties across their nationwide store networks. The flow of integrating local and cooperative products into modern distribution networks is spreading across Vietnam's retail industry as a whole.

The wall of channel-building that remains for producers

On the other hand, many agricultural operators still struggle to build stable sales channels. While Central Retail says it 'always responds to support for cooperatives and operators in getting produce onto modern distribution,' what it prioritizes is produce with quality certification, clear origin, OCOP standards and certified growing areas. Obtaining certification and origin traceability is becoming a de facto condition of access to modern retail.

Implications for Japanese buyers and distributors

The flow in which Vietnamese retail selectively sources VietGAP- and OCOP-certified produce is also an indicator for production-area evaluation for Japanese buyers. Produce adopted into modern distribution networks is more likely to have its quality history in order, and can be used as a first screen when importing or developing private brands. Production areas that have obtained certification on a cooperative basis can become trading candidates on both stable supply and quality.

Summary

As Vietnam's major retailers strengthen their lock-in of local agricultural products, new sales channels are opening for certified cooperatives and smallholders. The conditions for getting onto mass-retail routes are clear: certifications such as VietGAP and OCOP, and origin traceability. The more producers advance certification, the higher the possibility of being built into domestic and overseas procurement networks.

Related Articles

WinCommerce to add up to 1,500 stores in 2026—direct fresh sourcing from 18 warehouses, accelerating its northern and rural strategy

Bach Hoa Xanh invades the north with its first Hanoi store—adding 1,000 stores in 2026, competing with a fresh-produce "double replacement"

Lam Dong's VietGAP/organic support ordinance takes effect—subsidizing certification costs up to 45 million dong, supporting avocado, coffee, and tea

Source

FreshPlaza「Vietnamese retailers expand support for local farm produce」

Vietnam+「Modern retail channels help expand market access for Vietnamese farm produce」

Major Vietnamese retailers such as Saigon Co.op and Central Retail are stepping up moves to source VietGAP- and OCOP-certified local produce directly from cooperatives and small-scale farmers.
