April alone recorded about US$532 million. The pace is running ahead of the US$8.5 billion posted for full-year 2025, and momentum is building toward the government's annual target of US$10 billion.

Jan–Apr exports of US$2.06 billion — April alone tops US$532 million

According to a report by Vietnam News (dated April 22), Vietnam's fruit and vegetable exports in January–April 2026 totaled US$2.06 billion, 22% higher than the same period a year earlier. The first quarter (Q1) alone reached US$1.53 billion, a 31.4% increase over Q1 of the previous year.

April exports came to about US$532 million. The figure held at a high level following March, with durian, jackfruit, coconut, passion fruit, pomelo and longan leading the way as the main export items.

Meanwhile, fruit and vegetable imports in January–March came to US$761.4 million (up 25.7% year on year), leaving a trade surplus of about US$998 million against exports. Export growth outpacing imports shows that the international competitiveness of Vietnam's fruit and vegetable industry is steadily strengthening.

China accounts for over 50% of export destinations — both market concentration and diversification

Among export destinations, China continues to account for more than 50% of the total, maintaining an overwhelming share. The full-scale rollout from April 2026 of the 'green lane' scheme for China-bound durian has sharply improved customs-clearance speed, underpinning the expansion of export volumes.

Outside China, the United States, South Korea and Japan function as major markets. In addition, new entries into Middle Eastern and European markets are also under way. The first shipment of pomelo to Australia took place in April 2026, a symbolic example of market diversification.

January–April fruit and vegetable exports in key data

Indicator

2026

Year on year

Jan–Apr exports

US$2.06 billion

+22%

April exports

about US$532 million

—

Q1 exports

US$1.53 billion

+31.4%

Q1 imports

US$761.4 million

+25.7%

Jan–Apr trade surplus

about US$998 million

—

Full-year 2025 result

US$8.5 billion

—

2026 annual target

US$10 billion

—

(Source: Vietnam News, VietnamPlus, General Department of Vietnam Customs statistics)

What industry insiders think

Dang Phuc Nguyen, Secretary General of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association (Vinafruit), stressed that 'enterprises should modernize production, adopt advanced farming technology and post-harvest handling, and strictly comply with the requirements of importing countries.' He signaled his view that lifting quality-control systems is indispensable to achieving the US$10 billion target.

Le Viet Binh, Deputy Chief of the Office of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, said that 'fruit and vegetable exports are expected to maintain strong momentum in the second quarter as well,' adding his view that new export protocols for frozen fruit and fresh coconut will act as a tailwind.

Local exporters say: 'The durian green-lane scheme has shortened customs clearance for China-bound shipments by one to two days. Maintaining the cold chain has become easier, and quality complaints have fallen.'

Impact on Japan's food industry — sourcing diversification and price trends

Japan is one of Vietnam's top export destinations, and this export surge brings a direct impact on the Japanese market as well.

The expanding supply of Vietnamese durian could bring a change to Japan's durian sourcing structure, which had been concentrated on Thai supply. The shift from coffee to durian in the Central Highlands is also advancing, suggesting an increase in supply volume over the medium to long term.

On the other hand, The reported pesticide-residue violations in EU-bound passion fruit are also grounds for Japanese buyers to review their import inspection systems. It is a positive that the Vietnamese side is strengthening oversight of growing-area management and packing facilities, but risk assessment by item will continue to be necessary.

Points to watch in Q2 — the lychee and mango peak and new protocols

The second quarter will be the biggest crunch period for Vietnam's fruit and vegetable exports. There are three points to watch.

1. Arrival of the lychee and mango peak
May to July marks the harvest peak for lychee in northern Vietnam and mango in the south. Durian shipments are also expected to keep increasing, making this a crucial period in which Q2 alone builds up a substantial portion of the annual target.

2. New export protocols for frozen fruit and fresh coconut
The export protocols for frozen fruit and fresh coconut being advanced by the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment are a measure aimed simultaneously at raising the added value of processed goods and opening new markets. If they become effective, the freshness-management risk concentrated in the harvest season can be dispersed, leading to stable year-round exports.

3. Strengthening growing-area management and traceability
The 'consistent traceability from soil sampling through to quarantine inspection' required by the green-lane scheme is expected to be rolled out horizontally to other items and markets going forward. Expanding dragon fruit exports to Thailand and the UAE also call for the same quality-control system, a move that is lifting the export competitiveness of Vietnamese fruit and vegetables as a whole.

Practical information summary

Item

Details

Main export items

Durian, jackfruit, coconut, passion fruit, pomelo, longan

Q2 items to watch

Lychee (north), mango (south), durian (central-south)

Largest export destination

China (over 50% share)

Other main markets

United States, South Korea, Japan, Australia, Middle East, Europe

New protocols

Frozen fruit, fresh coconut (details being finalized)

Amount still needed to meet the annual target

about US$7.94 billion (to be achieved from May to December)

Relevant bodies

Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association (Vinafruit)

Summary

Vietnam's fruit and vegetable exports reached US$2.06 billion in January–April 2026, showing strong growth of 22% year on year. Against the annual target of US$10 billion, that works out to about 20% achieved in four months. Q2 is expected to add further ground as the peak seasons for lychee, mango and durian overlap. With new protocols for frozen fruit and fresh coconut and the opening of a new market in pomelo to Australia, Vietnam's fruit and vegetable industry is reaching a turning point in both 'volume' and 'quality.' For Japanese food-related companies too, Vietnam's presence as a sourcing destination is likely to grow still further.

(Source: Vietnam News / VietnamPlus / General Department of Vietnam Customs / Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association)

["post-1054","industry_news","type-industry_news","status-publish","hentry
["GET
